Clutch
The left pedal. Lets you change gear and pull away smoothly. Mastering it is the first big step.
The car
A modern, dual-controlled Nissan Micra: small, easy to see out of and easy to park. Have a look round it now so it feels familiar on your first lesson.
Dual controls
The car has a second brake and clutch pedal in the passenger footwell, so I can slow or stop the car from my side if I need to. It means you can get on with learning without worrying about getting something wrong.
Most of the time you'll never notice them, and the aim is that I never need to use them. You're in control. They're just there as a safety net, especially in your first few lessons.
Your first lesson
Before you drive anywhere, you'll set the car up for you. Remember it as DSSSM.
Check all the doors are properly shut.
Move the seat so you can push the clutch to the floor with a slight bend in your knee.
Adjust the wheel so you can hold it at "ten to two" with relaxed arms.
Belt on, flat across your chest and low across your hips.
Set the interior and both door mirrors so you can see behind with only a glance.
Get to know it
Don't worry about learning these now. We'll go through every one together, at your pace.
The left pedal. Lets you change gear and pull away smoothly. Mastering it is the first big step.
The middle pedal. Gentle, early braking keeps things smooth and safe.
The right pedal. Small movements go a long way.
A manual gearbox, so you'll be able to drive both manual and automatic cars once you pass.
Holds the car still when you've stopped, on hills and at the end of every drive.
The stalks behind the wheel. You'll be signalling without thinking in no time.
Open the 3D Micra to walk round it, open the doors and sit in the driver's seat. Or practise the manoeuvres in our Parking Test game.
